Do you have items in your home that bring you extra joy because of the story behind them? Well these items also carry the power to change your energy based on their color! That is how I feel about this colorful Shiloh Sophia painting that hangs in our living room. Although completely unplanned, this treasured piece of artwork came to us after a road trip through California that involved romance, crashing waves and a magical cliffside inn.
David and I had just moved to Los Angeles from NYC after our wedding. We were eager to explore California, so we decided to take an eleven hour road trip up to Northern California and explore Mendocino. We drove past trucks filled with citrus fruits, and watched in wonder as the landscape changed from palm trees to vineyards and then rolling green mountains reminiscent of the Tuscan countryside. I love a road trip because it really helps me feel connected to the place I am in.
We arrived at Mendocino and checked into a small, cliffside inn overlooking the crashing waves. The inn owners (who were also a gay couple) told us about a short hike nearby where we could explore the beauty of the area. They even packed us a small picnic basket with sandwiches, fruit, cheese, and a small bottle of wine! I remember so clearly sitting on a bench overlooking the ocean, feeling the cool sea mist and enjoying our romantic picnic.
The next day, we ventured into the charming town of Mendocino and came upon a beautiful art gallery with a gorgeous flower garden in front. As soon as we walked in, we saw a small, beautiful painting of a woman’s face (posted above). David and I were transfixed by the swirls of color and the energy of this artwork. Looking closer, we could see positive affirmations and blessings painted all over the canvas. We spent about 45 minutes in the gallery and decided to grab some lunch.
“I can’t stop thinking about those paintings” David said.
And I agreed. Something about the intention behind those images and the intentional use of color was not only soothing but felt sacred to me – and luckily to both of us. We had budgeted for two nights at the inn and one fancy dinner at a restaurant, but there was no plan for us to purchase anything else on this trip. In a joyful moment of spontaneity we decided to purchase the painting and forego our fancy dinner. That night in our room, in front of a crackling fireplace, we shared slices of pizza and enjoyed gazing at our new painting. To this day, I feel joy and peace when I see it in our living room.
In my upcoming book I write about the use of color props. Color props involve utilizing a physical item to invoke a specific energy or emotion. For example, this painting is one of my favorite color props. To me, orange represents balance and intuition. Therefore when I look at this painting, not only enjoy the memory, but I receive a boost of balanced orange energy in the midst of my day.
Now its your turn! What color props do you have in your home right now? Is there an image, stone, scarf, or jewelry that brings you joy? Then let me know what color it is in the comments below! I will help you make this item into a color prop that can give you a meaningful boost whenever you see it!

I love blues Dougall. The deeper richer blues.
I feel the texture of dark blue velvet energy wrapped around your body that feel represents a rich sensual nature and with that comes deep emotions. I feel you as having deep emotions, like the deep blue of the ocean. I feel the depth of your emotional nature is the source of both your greatest JOY and your deepest pain. When you allow your emotions to be fluid and move through you … when you flow through to releasing them on a regular basis, you feel more balanced and life is easier for you … it is when you hold on that the pain is intense. I feel you may have empathic awareness of others emotions and the trick is to not take on their feelings as your own. I feel as if bringing is some bright yellow energy – like bright sunlight – when you are working on releasing or balancing your emotions will be beneficial for you … visualize blending the deep blue with the bright yellow and healing green will help the flow of releasing.
THANK YOU for allowing me to share what I was perceiving.
I am sharing this after listening to Dugall on today’s Hay House radio show … the first I have heard of him and I was blown away!
I have a LOVE of color, all colors!! I have been able to understand the dominant aura color of a person only when I hug them and when I ask to know it. I have recently had people if I can “see” what color is around them and I have said no I do not see … however, when you wrote about the rich blues the depths of the ocean color came to me as if I had hugged you and and this message came … so I decided to share it!
This message seems to describe me as well, you got me spot on with the empathetic nature and carrying other people’s feelings with me and my deep emotions being my blessings and curse. I’ve been irking on managing it my whole life. I will try what you suggested.
Thank you so much for sharing. It helped me xxxx
Seriously because of recently hearing you on a radio show, I now have orange flowers and treasure my painting that I got recently from an artist at the Chopra Center. I just moved to CA a year ago but where is my road trip love partner?? And more work! Help! being dramatic with not kidding. I found you two years ago on Darius radio show, but don’t listen to many at all. You had the promotional offer of 15 minute reading with you that I got. Amazing! I am attracted to very few intuitives etc as I promote a few and am in the healing field as well and I was so drawn to you two years ago. And now look at you!! Moved to CA, Oprah, on and on! I must be intuitive, LOL! My favorite color to wear is white, I love ocean colors and the sunsets, yellow, orange reds etc, that’s a great Light blast. xx Lisa
Thank for you for such a lovely post 🙂
Dougall,
Green is my favorite color, and blues and purples follow.
I feel that you are attracted to these colors because of your intense focus on your spiritual nature as this time in your life! You are consciously aware that you want to evolve your soul and heal all the lower vibration energy accumulated in this lifetime and from past lives. You are perfectly named ~ the ROSE vibration brings the energy of radiant rosy love energy to all you do, and it specifically is used during your heart-healing. I feel as if you are an intuitive healer that acquired this desire through a difficult youth … and your wisdom comes from experience. When you need to ground yourself think of those 3 colors swirling together and mixing to a deep, dark color and let it ground you to Mother Earth … then affirm:
I am on my soul path, as I journey on Mother Earth I am living my purpose to life!
Hi Dougall-
I loved your story. You write beautifully. I have an antique turquoise blue glass container that was my grandmother’s. It is shaped like a crown and was the home to some kind of cosmetic. It is the prettiest color and I have always loved it since I was a little girl. I keep it on top of spiritual books in my bedroom. I now have a collection of similar colored vases that I have all over the house.

Dougal–I love this post, love you AND the color orange! Thank you for reminding us that color is a powerful and very evocative tool in our lives. I have things in my home that are not expensive, but that I LOVE because of the feelings invoked by the colors. All the best to you and David for spreading messages of love and intuition to us all. Thank you for sharing your beautiful story, and such an enchanting painting with us! The angel’s wing really took me, and the deep blues and bright oranges have been a recurring symbol for me personally. Which connects me to a piece of artwork in my flat that I really cherish- a Joseph Raffael koi painting I reproduced in art class when I was 16. It was so joyful and inspiring for me when I first discovered it, I remember how much love I put into recreating it. I stuffed it away for many years of resistance until very recently, when I’ve finally settled into a place to call my own. Koi have been a symbol of grace for me, and whenever I see the deep blues and red oranges together, I am washed over with this sense that I am on the path to my greatest joy. Thank you for being such a great beacon on this journey. Lots of Love! <3 (Joseph Raffael's original: http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/585/3699/1600/49_bigpopup.jpg)
My favorite color is red, Deep and absorbing shades of red.
I love my red leather couch as it is filled with all sorts of passion!
Hi Dougall, Thank you for sharing, the beautiful memory and beautiful painting. My husband and I take a trip to that same area whenever we get the chance. Beautiful!
My sister gave me a beautiful mosaic bowl years ago, pale blue, green lotus leaves, pink lotus flowers and a green frog in the middle. I never get tired of seeing it. I also have a print by an artist, Linda Carter Holman, called “the beauty of the world”, so many colors, such a joyful, balanced feeling I get looking at it. Thank you also for a reading you gave me in 2004, you said my husband would be successful going into business on his own, he has been! I wrote notes as you talked on orange paper, his truck for his business is orange!
lots of love and gratitude
I love the world of color, but my home is void of any color of significance. My husband picked out the furniture for our home and its brown to go with the brown carpet and black TV. I am color starved because of his sensitivity to color. It drives him to madness literally. So I truly enjoy works of art like the one you posted to this blog. What stands out most to me are the yellow hues used in the painting. You said on signs from your soul that yellow is a sign of higher intellect invoking wisdom. This is the kind of spirit I perceive you have and is the reason why I have decided to start following your work. I never heard anyone speak about color with the same level of knowing that you present, and so I thank you for your contributions to the world of faith and phenomena that make this plane a little more comprehendable for people like me.
Thanks for sharing. We are interested in the artist’s name. It is a vibrant and beautiful painting.

Hi Dougall,
I am just learning about you from Hay House Radio. I am impressed with how accurate you are with those you had spoken with on the phone.
Thank you for being who you are and sharing your blessed gift with the rest of the world.
My favorite color is purple. I love purple! I am drawn to all shades of purple – from violet to lavendar to lilac. I even wear a violet color crystal heart to enhance my already strong intuition.
“That night in our room, in front of a crackling fireplace, we shared slices of pizza and enjoyed gazing at our new painting.”
