Magnesium Magic: The Key to Calmness in a Hectic World

Hi everyone, this is Dougall’s husband and manager David! I’ve always been interested in exploring different methods of health/wellness and am often making recommendations to family and friends. I absolutely love doing deep dives into what works through research and testing things out on myself. My interests are varied and change regularly, from skincare to vitamins, self-care techniques, cooking, gardening and more. But the constant is that I’m always looking for tools and techniques that help to provide a greater sense of peace, balance, and calm contentedness.

When Dougall and I met 21 years ago in New York City, I was a professional makeup artist who was working in fashion, TV, and bridal. My background was in business, but I quickly found that I was far more interested in creative pursuits.

I had already been drawn to color through makeup and could clearly see how different makeup colors can bring out different energies in people. For example, if you enjoy wearing a bold red lipstick, you know how it can bring out a sense of confident assertiveness. Similarly, a pale pink blush can just as easily bring out a sweet, almost shy softness.

Dougall’s intuitive work with interpreting auras really intrigued me, and I was quickly fascinated by the depth of his knowledge. Dougall taught me how aura colors not only reflect our current energy, but also how we can use aura colors with intention to change our state of mind… just like makeup!

In the last few years, one of the things that I’ve gotten really interested in is how various vitamins and supplements can be used to help us improve various common health concerns. And although I could talk about this topic for hours, I’d like to start by sharing one specific supplement that I find incredibly helpful. It’s magnesium, a mineral that can help create a deep sense of relaxation and peace. It not only helps to relax the mind, but it also helps reduce muscle soreness and body pain. Even though it can be used during the day to reduce anxiety, its relaxing effects can also help you get peaceful sleep if taken at night! Just to be clear, I’m not a doctor of health professional, this recommendation is solely based on my own personal positive experiences with magnesium.

**Why Magnesium?**

Magnesium is an essential mineral that plays a crucial role in over 300 biochemical reactions in the body. I’ve read that a vast majority of human beings are deficient in magnesium, which means that many of us are probably not getting enough to benefit from our diets alone. When I started supplementing with magnesium tablets during the day, I noticed a marked increase in my sense of calm and a reduction in any feelings of stress, nervousness and anxiety.

The main ways that I like to take magnesium are by swallowing tablets, but I also enjoy using magnesium oil spray. I’ll share more about the different forms below.

Tablet form:

If you’re going to take tablets, know that magnesium comes in different forms. It’s good to read the bottle so you know which kind of magnesium you’re getting. These are the main types of magnesium that I like:

**Magnesium Glycinate:** This is the form that I prefer (although Magnesium Citrate is also good). If you’re aiming to relax your muscles and unwind, magnesium glycinate will be great for you. It’s easily absorbed and less likely to cause digestive discomfort. This form is often recommended for those who want to improve sleep quality. I started by taking 100 milligrams a day, and increased gradually until I found the highest daily amount that didn’t affect my digestion. For me that is 400 milligrams a day. I take Doctor’s Best Magnesium Glycinate, which come in 100mg tablets, so I have one with breakfast, one with lunch, and two about an hour before bed.

Magnesium Spray

I discovered magnesium oil spray after a friend recommended it. And since I was already taking magnesium supplements, this seemed like an interesting and different way to try it out. I went on amazon and ordered one that had many positive reviews before trying it out for a few weeks and now I use it multiple times daily! What I immediately liked about using a spray is that you can get localized relief of muscles that are sore. By applying magnesium directly to your skin, you can target specific areas of tension or soreness. And even though it’s called magnesium oil spray, it is not oily at all.

Many reviews suggest using magnesium spray on underarms or the bottoms of the feet, because these areas absorb it the quickest. A side benefit of using the spray under your arms is that it acts as a natural deodorant! On most days, I use magnesium spray under my arms instead of deodorant or antiperspirant, and don’t have any kind of body odor. It’s pretty convenient to spray some on after a shower as my deodorant, all while giving myself a calming boost.

There is one other way that I like to use magnesium, although I don’t turn to it as frequently as the options above.

This third option is to take Epsom salt baths. If you’ve ever used Epsom salt in a bath and noticed how calm you felt afterwards, this is because your body naturally absorbed the magnesium that was in the water. This is a wonderful option if you love taking baths, but I didn’t find it to be practical on a daily basis.

Whether you’re a busy professional, a wellness enthusiast, or simply someone seeking a calmer, more balanced life, magnesium has something to offer. You can choose a supplement that aligns with your preferences and needs, and experiment with different forms to discover what resonates with you the most.

As always, here’s to a life filled with vibrant energy and holistic well-being!

With love and magnesium-infused light,

David
