The TV Appearance That Almost Wasn’t: How I Overcame Insecurity (And You Can Too)

This past week I was gently reminded of how important it is to move energy, and to really practice what I preach.

As a psychic intuitive, I have been blessed with the opportunity to share my work on television multiple times over the years. I even co-hosted a late-night talk show for a short period of time.

It’s always interesting being interviewed on mainstream TV, because I have to remember that the majority of the audience isn’t well-versed in what I do. But it’s an amazing opportunity to talk about new age ideas, and to share spiritual concepts in the hopes that they will help people in as approachable a way as possible.

This time, I was on TV with my friend Radleigh Valentine to promote our new Angels & Auras oracle deck that comes out next week. I’m extremely proud of what we’ve created, and I thank you for your patience as I shout from the rooftop about the launch. I’m just so excited to share these cards which are infused with not only loving guidance from our angels, but also the healing power of auras!

Part of being a co-author and the responsibilities that come with it, is doing our best to secure interviews that will help spread the word.

For example, with my last book I scheduled 95 percent of the media interviews myself. If you’ve been thinking about writing a book or promoting any kind of product, please know that this is the process for most authors as well. This is true whether or not you work with a publisher. All of the TV shows and most major radio shows that I was on were booked because of my moving energy.

But a few months ago as I was creating my marketing plan, I noticed my brain start to move into some doubt and insecurity.

For Angels & Auras I hesitated to reach out to my television contacts. The brain is always very good at coming up with reasonable thoughts as to why something won’t work.

“Producers are busy. Don’t trouble them with your request.”

“I’ve never seen someone promote an oracle deck on TV before.”

“What if you get rejected and then you’ll look foolish?”

These were the thoughts racing through my mind. I found myself coming up with plausible reasons not to send off an email and just try.

After rounds of back and forth with my inner critic, I knew that I owed it to myself to move energy. I sent off an email announcing the deck and asking for an interview with Good Day LA, a well-known morning news show in Los Angeles.

The first email I sent didn’t receive a response. My inner critic had a field day with that one.

There was an internal song of “I told you so” playing over and over.

I decided to face my fear and email again, this time with a series of new ideas about possible topics.

Within minutes I got a response from the producer of Good Day LA. He had been out of town, and was responding with a date and time for a potential interview!

Just yesterday Radleigh and I were sitting on set before we went live. I took a deep breath and looked around. On the screen of the show were enormous images of the cards that we created with love and intention.

I was sitting next to my good friend who opened the door to this opportunity for me, and I felt delighted to help him with his first interview on T.V. If you’d like to watch the interview, check it out here!

I giggled to myself that had I listened to my inner critic, none of this would have happened.

I see this so often for people. Our brain creates these illusions to keep us small and in our comfort zone. We abide by the fear of rejection. We listen to the fear that we are troubling people by expressing our truth. We visualize what we want but wait for someone else to do it for us.

If I may offer one piece of advice, it is this:

Don’t listen to the inner critic. Move energy. Allow doors to open. And trust that you can do it. It may not always yield the result you want, but there is a chance that the Universe will surprise. Taking concrete steps move energy.

Much Love,

  1. Thank you, it was an inspiring and uplifting interview. Very positive ‘news’ indeed, in the world of negative news. As I don’t watch TV, and don’t live in LA, I didn’t watch it on their TV local news program, but did see this interview on Youtube or somewhere in cyber space.

As ‘New Age’ becomes more mainstream, I hope New Age doesn’t lose it’s magic but that mainstream becomes magic.

Already pre-order this deck, Angels and Auras, on Amazon. And can’t wait for the mail on Halloween.

  2. Thank you for sharing your experience, Dougall. I feel that every time I do an intuitive practice reading for my classes. So happy for you that you pushed through it.

  3. Thanks for the reminders regarding the inner critic. Wonderful interview.
