Why I don’t believe in evil or demons

Recently a longtime client emailed me in a bit of a panic. (For privacy, I’ve changed her name and will refer to her as Cheryl). I’ve always enjoyed Cheryl’s spiritual curiosity over the years in both coaching and intuitive sessions. Her email surprised me because she always had what I perceived to be a calm confidence in both herself and her belief system.

In the email, Cheryl explained that she had attended a birthday party for a friend. There was a tarot card reader there, and each attendee had the opportunity to sit down with the intuitive for a mini session.

During the mini session, she asked about her new business, which was taking longer to get started than expected. She wanted to know if the intuitive had any feeling as to why?

“Yes, you have a demon around your business.” – the intuitive casually responded.

In her email to me, Cheryl said that at first she thought it was a ridiculous thing for someone to say. But as the days went on, she started feeling a little skittish and paranoid.

As a professional intuitive, I have always found language and word choice during a session to be incredibly important. And when I hear stories like this, it breaks my heart.

I’m speaking for myself here, but I do not believe in demons. I do not believe that your soul or aura can be cracked. I do not believe that someone can energetically harm another person.

I realize that this may be a controversial opinion when it comes to the world of energy work, so I want to elaborate.

For me, everything starts with our intention. My intention is only to be connected to the highest vibration. This is also why I don’t believe we need to “protect” our energy. The thought itself sets an intention that our energy is vulnerable and can be affected by anyone or anything.

When I think of the concept of evil or demons, the closest I can reasonably understand would be things like addiction, greed, bigotry, or violence.

But these are not demonic forces, they are symptoms of fear that are generated by human beings. I believe that the divine is just that…divine.

I immediately hopped on a phone call with my client and tried to set her at ease, but what I found the most fascinating was that I could hear the doubt in her voice. Her entire outlook shifted from one mini-session at a party. As an intuitive, it’s another big reminder to me that words are powerful.

When I teach students about giving readings or energy work, I always stress the importance of being mindful of the words that we choose.

After performing well over 10,000 private sessions, I have certainly made (and learned from) being too carefree with my words.

I have observed follow up sessions where my words were misunderstood and how much worry it can cause. As a result, I’ve put so much effort into finding the best ways to relay a message.

Obviously, I can’t obsess over every word that is expressed. But there are some trigger words that as light workers I feel like we can be cautious of.

And that’s why I dislike words like evil, demons or something similar during a session.

I always go back to intention. When we are offering guidance to a client, friend or loved one, we want to raise their vibration, not stoke fear.

As we all know, life can be hard. It is one of the reasons I’m honored to be able to offer insight and guidance to people.

I was so grateful to get that email from my client because it was a gentle reminder to me… be cautious of your words. Offer love, support and even when pointing our a challenge use words to empower.

Much Love,

  1. Dougall Thankyou for your insights. Every time I read your blog I resonate on a deep level! Thankyou!!!
    I am grateful for you!
    Thankyou!
I truly believe, like the book says- our word is our wand! & Intention is power!!!
    Thankyou!!!

  2. Thank you for this clarity, Dougall. I believe as you do that all is intention and to protect yourself from demons implies that demons are around. I just returned from Egypt where it was often suggested to “protect” ourselves from the energy in certain areas. I did not feel the need and never have. I did get Covid while there…. but not from demons. It was from very little sleep.

  3. Thank you Dougall.I appreciate you sharing this.I think they should remove the devil from the tarot deck.Maybe you could create a color tarot deck? Just a rhought!

  4. Thank you so much for sharing this Dougall! Your work shows your light and love for humanity, we are lucky to have you!
As for that tarot reader, so unprofessional! If anyone meets a reader/psychic that implements fear in you, walk away, their words have no value. Trust yourself instead! 🙂

  5. Dougall,
I think this is such an important point, and you shared it so eloquently and beautifully. I’ve had similar experiences with clients who were told that they had been “cursed” by someone, and as crazy as it sounded to them initially, they started to buy into the belief. Like you said, words are powerful.

  6. I so agree with this. I am a massage therapist and I am so careful about what I say to clients about their bodies. I use positive affirming words about how well I see their body releasing. I personally can still hear the words of a “good” massage therapist telling me how tight I am and how they won’t be able to get it all done in a session. Instead of saying you are doing such a great job of releasing and your muscles are relaxing under my touch.

  7. Thank you for this blog, Dougall. You’ve made important distinctions that I find very valuable.. especially the intentions we set regarding our own energy.

  8. Thank you, Dougall. I agree wholeheartedly with you. Abraham teaches that there is only Light/Love and that what people might perceive of evil or demons is only those spaces where Love is not being allowed in. I like that. If our Universe was created by God and if God is Love, how can you explain evil in the world?

  9. Sorry, you weren’t really talking about beliefs, but about how to approach the language you use when giving messages to you clients. If I make responses in the future, I’ll try to stay on topic. Just got caught up in how much I appreciated your message. Oops!

  10. I’m so intrigued by this conversation. I hear this a lot when friends and I speak about vulnerabilities within the spiritual world. How do you keep out evil? An intuitive once gifted me the language of describing me as having “inherent spiritual boundaries”. She further described me being associated with a high vibration that just didnt expect to receive any less than a high vibration filled with love right back. I don’t say that to boast, it’s to share that language. Hearing you explain the vulnerability of adding in a “protection” to readings really resonates with me. It makes me feel more secure in my using my boundaries for both me and my client. I typically will add the protection of welcoming only those of the light for the comfort of my clients. I may have to think twice now! Thank you for your insight D.!
